Text Box: Megapode birds like to lay their eggs in the warm soil of active volcanoes. High on the slopes of Simbo Island we collected a few for lunch and descended to the shore to cook them on the vent of the volcano, together with sweet potatoes and green vegetables.
Heat was provided by the volcano’s lower vents, pumping pressurized steam at high temperatures from crevices between the rocks of the beach. The pebbles were stained strong oranges and yellows by the sulphur and other minerals expelled from deep within the earth.
