Text Box: MEMORIES OF CONFLICT
Mataniko Falls, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands
85 x 46 cm / 34” x 18”
Acrylic on canvas
Text Box: This waterfall once ran with blood. The Mataniko River saw desperate fighting in 1943 as US Marines held Japanese hordes off in the six-month long battle for Henderson Airfield, key to the Solomon Islands. More recently, the area has been off-bounds due to the “Tension”; a breakdown of law and order and tribal strife, making the area unsafe once again.
Our guide had not been to this place in over eight years. It was moving to watch him clamber over the falls, reliving childhood memories and contemplating the history and his own family’s wartime losses.
