Text Box: Melanesia was head-hunting territory until Christian missionaries finally persuaded tribes to change their habits around a hundred years ago. Relics of this frightening past can still be found; cairns of skulls of conquered warriors, often placed in positions of deference to the skulls of the chiefs who killed them.
These peoples believed that human power, spirit and knowledge was concentrated in the head, thus, on death, the head of chiefs were carefully cleaned, treated with honour and respect, and placed in a positions of authority. The rest of the body was simply thrown away.
